Research Questions

For this blog post, use the comments to post possible research questions based on your primary source as we discussed in class on Tuesday. Remember, strong research questions lead to further research and exploration while weak research questions are those that can be quickly answered, causing an end to any further investigation.

In addition to posting your questions, you should also offer advice and/or suggestions on other people's research questions in a second comment that can be posted later. The goal here is to help your classmates, so comments such as "your questions are good" don't offer a lot in regards to constructive criticism.

  1. Why do alcohol ads repetitively use advertising that appeal mostly to male audience when both genders drink? Why does using sex and sexual innuendos work so well when attempting to sell?

    1. I think for your first question you could compare on how alcohol advertisements use sex to other types of food or products. For the second question you could be more specific by maybe asking how men are more likely to buy products because of sex, or how women could be persuaded to buy products because of sex.

  2. Should advertisement contain sexuality to attract customers or not ? What extent of sexuality is appropriate ?

    1. I think with your first question, it has a good idea, but maybe leave it more open ended instead of having a yes or no answer with an explanation depending on the opinion of the reader. With your second question, i think it leaves a lot of room for the reader to make an argument. A good idea would be to maybe combined the two questions by saying, "How can advertisement contain sexuality to a certain extent but still be appropriate and attract their customers?"

  3. How does the judgment of a social group impact the actions of males? Is this impact different than that of females? Is the ad targeting males more than females, and if so how?

    1. With your first two questions, although they are very good arguments, I think you should make more connection with your primary source(the ad).

  4. Why is women objectification in the ad industry so pervasive and prevalent? How is this received in different countries? How is this portrayal of women tied into the very fundamental values in our society and others?

    1. I think that you could link the first two questions together to make a more narrow, but still strong, research question. The third question might be much broader of a topic to deal with, but still a great question none the less.

  5. Do advertisements that use the objectification of women, help sell more products than those that don't, if so why is that? The use of sex to sell products has grown recently, why is that and will this trend continue?

    1. Your first question is good and would provide you with plenty of material the second question however has a direct answer even with the prediction aspect of it and I don't think you would have enough material to right a good paper.

  7. Can using male interests and celebrities to advertise products be effective when these products are typically sold in a market dominated by promotions that rely upon a man's attraction to women (aka using sex to sell) ?

    1. This is a really good question and I'm curious as to whether or not it would be as successful as using sex to sell their products. But, at the same time, aren't women and sex interests to men (stereotypically speaking).

  8. Why more and more advertisements use sex to attract customers? How do sexual implict ads make use of the difference between gender?

    1. I'd advise you to be more specific about what kind of advertisements you're talking about - too open ended. For example, are you looking at alcohol, clothing, food, cars, etc...? You should focus mainly on one of these genres and back it up with data over time.

  9. It seems the media in general is becoming more sex driven, from celebrity sex tapes and tabloids to tv and movies is this due to the increase in technology for mass media or is it based on the changing in our cultural morals? If our morals have shifted over the changing of generations in how we view sex. Then why is that?

    1. I feel like the first question is giving an alternative to what you are trying to prove, if you want to say our morals are changing, then may be mass media is a reason, not an alternative. The second question may be answered by your first question, or at least are closely tied to it.

  10. Why is sex so prominent in advertising, and why does it work? Does the media pressure our society to become more prematurely sexualized then in the past? How does sexuality on the media affect our children?

    1. The last question seems to be off topic compared to the other two questions. I think everything will connect better if you were to examine how the change in our advertisement affected the kids that grew up in each decade.

  11. Does the advertising with sex bring more impact to the society? If it does or not, why? Is the ad influence male more than female? How the ad use the difference between genders?

    1. For your second question, I think it would be better to ask "Why (or not) does the ad have more influence in male than female?" or "How does the ad affect male and female in different ways?".

  12. Does the perfume really help people to get sexuality satisfactions as the advertisement shows? Why or why not? How will the sexuality in media affect people's value, especially in children and teenagers? What other social problems may be caused by sexuality commercial? Are legal standards necessary in media-controlling? Why or why not?

    1. Your questions concerning how sexual commercials affect people's values are good, you could possibly go further with your first question, though, and ask, not necessarily if the perfume helps people to get sexual satisfactions, but how people react to sexual commercials and if they actually believe that what the commercial is implying is true.

  13. How have advertisements involving alcohol evolved over time to drive companies profits up with respect to sexual content? In a public scope what is considered too explicit for an audience?

    1. I think that your first question is good, but would suggest that you also use video clips that demonstrate specific examples of exactly how alcohol has evolved over time. Additionally, in order for the first question to tie into the first I would include possible interviews of various individuals in order to get a better perspective on what the public scope deems as acceptable or not.

  14. Are women contradicting how the media is portraying them to be or adapting to the stereotype? DId the media make this blonde hair, big lipped stereotype or did the women in our society create it?

    1. I think your first question is very original than another one. You can just use different movies, comercials to make some comparison. And I also feel that the second one is hard to analyse deeply.

  15. How has the combat exclusion act affected women's advancement in the military? How do the roles of US military women differ from the roles of military women throughout the world? What are the arguments for and against allowing women to serve in combat positions?

    1. your question can be very controversial, which makes it very interesting. Perhaps you can also talk about how different politicians and presidential candidates are approaching the issue.

  16. How does our media affect our views on female drivers? Or drivers of different races?

    1. I think you could open this question up even more than just media. You could ask how other things affect our views of female drivers such as what others say or life experiences.

  17. How have television advertising and programs driven stereotypes in the American culture and if they have, have they shifted our view on sex?

    1. I think it would also be interesting to see how the driving influence of television and advertisements compare to other media forms (web, magazines, etc.).

  18. Does stereotypical male hobbies/music/things males like attract male attention to an advertisement? Is power over women an ideal that appeals to men? How does music and images support an underlying implication in advertisement?

    1. I think in general there are some good ideas here, but maybe try to focus more on either the hobbies, etc. or the appeal of women. Otherwise there may just be too much information to work with.

  19. How is an uprising due to a controversial advertisement a desired affect by a company? How do the reactions to such an advertisement differ between the offended and the complimented, and do they fall to their stereotypes?

  20. why does objectifying a certain sex in ads and in the media appeal to the opposite sex? does have to do with control and the human desire of being in control, or does it subconsciously attract attract the person into liking the product because of the person being objectified.

  21. Does the constant objectification of women in the media change the way that men view them? If so, in what ways do they accomplish this and why is such an undesirable effect able to come to fruition?
