Commonplace Topics

Wednesday's blog entry is two-parted: first, you should post a brief description of what your topic is and what you hope to accomplish with it (i.e., what should your audience take away from it?) by Tuesday at midnight. Second, you should go back and comment on a post other than your own, commenting whether or not you think it will be effective and providing feedback (remember, your goal is to provide assistance, so provide clear and specific feedback). The comment should be posted by midnight Wednesday.

  1. My topis is about the use of Adderall by college students who aren't prescribed. My arguement behind it is the fact that students dont understand how it can damage the brain who dont have the attention deficit disorder. My audience should realize what they are getting themselves into by becoming dependent on this drug.

    1. what racism exactly are you talking about , racism between the soccer players or the discrimination of soccer players by teams based on their race or ethnicity. Be more specific about what kind of racism you are talking about.

  3. My topic is about concussions in sports, focusing mainly on football. The argument is that young athletes are opening themselves up to brain damage that could affect them the rest of their lives. Also how professionals do not take concussions seriously, even though there are several recorded cases of concussion related suicide. And how the suicide of professional athletes who are our models affect younger athletes view on safety. The audience should take away that concussions should not be taken lightly, and that better safety needs to be implemented.

  4. My topic is the media biased in politics and how it effects our opinions on who to vote for in the upcoming elections. My audience should take away a knowledge on what to believe and what to ignore while watching news-like television.

    1. Your topic has a lot of scope and potential. To maintain a strong ethos, I would suggest you write the essay in a way that you do not seem biased. Also, by "the media", I am assuming you only mean mainstream news?

  5. I am going to talk about the gun control. The audience should know the reasons of gun control and the purpose of holding a gun in order to have a better use of a gun.

    1. Are you going to take the side of more strict gun control, or less strict? i think you should pick a side then form an opinion about it.

  6. My topic is about how portrayal of women by media, specifically popular culture including music and shows like Jersey Shore, influence how women are viewed by society as a whole. I wish to unveil the non-obvious and long term effects of such a portrayal.

  7. My topic discusses illegal actions committed college teams/athletes and the sanctions laid down by not just the NCAA but a higher law. After reading my paper what I'd like the audience to take from it is the severity these actions have not only on their respective teams but on the university as a whole.

  9. A recent topic of discussion is how colleges can block student athletes from transfering to other schools for any reason. I will discuss whytbis is wrong and why the NCAA should step in when resolving this issue, I hope to let my audience know that students should have the right to choose where they attend college after all it is their education and student athletes are students first.

    1. Seems like a pretty good topic. It is relevant to college students, and it is timely because transferring schools is always timely. I would suggest backing it with anecdotes about people who had this trouble. Also seems you want to put an emphasis on student athletes are students first. I suggest bringing that up through the paper as a reoccurring theme.

    1. For a topic that large it can be a problem to get everything that you want to talk about in 750 to 1100 words. I would recommend talking about a environmental issue that is recent in the news or a local issue maybe even one on campus. so just narrow down your topic.

  11. I'm planning on talking about false advertisements in the media, specifically ones that make men believe if they buy a certain product they will attract more women. I'm going to say how unrealistic these scenarios are and talk about why their tactics work.

    1. This is a good topic to discuss, make sure to give concrete examples of what these advertisements are doing to draw the attention of males and how far-fetched some of these advertisements are.

  13. I'm going to write about the importance on sports here in the United States. Sports create opportunities to learn life skills such as communication and make friends no matter what age the athletes are.

  14. My topic is on whether student athletes should get paid due to the fact that the universities make so much money off of them that they will not see. Although athletes don't see that money that the university makes there is no good way to make a system that would work.

    1. Very interesting and relevant topic, especially at this university. It is also good that you acknowledge that there may be no good way to resolve the issue. Only issue is maybe that not everyone is interested in sports.

  18. My topic is about how the war on drugs, which largely ignores the root causes of the problem, has spawned the war at the border. I hope my audience will be compelled to open up a discussion about whether the goals of the current drug war are still important or if they need reevaluation.
