Twilight for Guys!

For this blog response, watch the video below. Afterwards, apply the same analytical framework that we used in class on Thursday to this video and post a response on this post answering one or more of the following questions, or even other issues that you see in the video. What are the assumptions this video makes about the male and female genders? About sexuality? What does this video ultimately say the sexual/gender dynamics of the fans of the Twilight franchise?

  1. There were many assumptions made on male and female genders in this video. It makes the assumption that guys just care about sex. It also makes fun of the assumption that females get very emotional over little things. For example the guys were fake crying when talking about the movie which is making fun of the fact of how obsessed some girls were with Twilight. It makes the assumption that guys would go see a movie to see hot girls making out while girls go to movies for the actual plot.

  2. I agree with Steven on how the video makes assumptions that guys would see a movie to see hot girls making out, and how it also makes fun of how obsessed with Twilight girls are. I would say that the video ultimately says that Twilight franchise is a female movie, and that men are not fans of it. Also it assumes that if Twilight was more about hot girls than vampires and werewolves then men would be bigger fans of the franchise.

  4. This video shows us some unavoidable and inevitable tendencies in society. Men and Women focus on different points of mass-media. Men usually pay attention to sex or other scenes. Women typically are curious about the content of one movie or advertisement. In this video, when a guy talked about his feeling. We can easily catch the wired emotion showing in his girlfriend’s eyes. She didn’t agree with him. She didn't consider Twilight to be one movie with scenes of hot girls and lesbians. All in all, the sexual dynamics of the fans of the Twilight franchise are dissimilar between men and women.

  5. I completely agree with the above to comments. I think this video is trying to portray the drastic difference in the way women and men think about sex. Girls look for meaning in any relationship whereas all guys would care about is sex. This video emphasizes the fact that Twilight is in fact a typical "female novel" and that the plot is too emotional and romantic for guys. Although what the video portrays is true, I still think that it has been stereotyped. I know a lot of girls who do not like Twilight and at the same time a lot of guys who happen to love it. I also feel that due to the prevalence of such stereotype in our culture many guys refrain from liking the novel.

  6. The video says a lot as far as stereotypes go. It says that a man will go see a movie as long as there are attractive females and make out scenes in it. It also portrays lust on the part of the guys. For females, it suggests that they can be overemotional and obsessed when it comes to Twilight (the man crying). It also assumes that guys do not want anything to do with Twilight (the girl who looked bored out of her mind while her boyfriend was being interviewed).

  7. After watching this video it is clear to see the assumptions that the creators of the video are trying to portray of media today. I agree with Steven with respect to this claim that the assumption is that men only care about sex, and sex appeal that women have, while women often seek romantic relationships. I thought it was funny how they showed males reactions in the interviews saying how much they enjoyed the movie. The trailer depicts the fact that Twilight is a video focused on a female audience, but if it had a cast such as shown above, it would draw to a greater male viewing population.

  8. This video is interesting because it indicates that the more sexual scenes a movie has, the greater it is for men to watch regardless of the plot of the movie and story behind it. Another interesting thing about the video is the reaction of the female viewer, she was clearly not happy with how excited her male companion was. I think that was interesting because that is how some men feel about the original twilight which has a lot of females with crushes on Edward or Jacob.

  9. I agree with all of the above comments, but ladies lets be honest, it isn't that we aren't attracted to the intercourse, but its the mystery behind it & all the feelings that lead up to it. On the flip side, I portray that males like to "skip", (so to speak) the sentimental emotions and feelings that lead up to actual interaction. With that being said, the movie indicates somewhat of a plot, simple enough for the males to be attached to which girl they are more attracted to & also to have a story along with watching pleasure. As for the females, we don't 'give it up' so easily enabling the males to bond with us more to create chemistry. This, some times more than others, leads to drama or fights or dilemmas...creating the fantasy or mystery.

  10. Everyone has been making some very good points. Twilight was obviously a series that really focused on its female audience. I think that this is a rare thing. This shows how both men and women have a heavy focus on sexuality in their media, and the media realizes that. While men and women differ in their preferences, sex and sexuality will always play a huge role in the media because it is what people want.

  11. Well first off pretty funny video "I loved the lesbians but, no one expected the werewolf to eat vagina" and going with the main concensus of the posts here the video portrays the point that if you show hot girls in underwear making out, men are going to watch it.

  12. The video is a sending the message that first off, twilight is strictly a girls movie. As we talked about in class, we know that this a huge stereotype, because even some guys in our class enjoy the movie twilight series. Another huge stereotype is that a movie full of woman making out would be enjoy to make many guys love the movie. In general, I thought that the movie spoof was hilarious, but it is only funny because the way that we perceive what the male gender enjoys.

  13. First off, as others have pointed out, this video portrays the classic stereotype of "men only care about sex and hot girls making out." The title of the video "Twilight for Guys" also makes it seem that only girls watch the original twilight, which, as Jacob pointed out, is completely untrue as guys in our class have watched and enjoyed the movie.

  14. I agree with all the above comments. The video illustrates the stereotype that guys prefer to watch movies for the hot girls or the scenes that give sexual arousal instead of the plot. As demonstrated in the clip, the guys only talked only about the girls and nothing about plot. The clip also shows how people characterized Twilight as a chick-flick instead of a video for both genders, unless there are sex scenes or more hot girls.

  15. Like most opinions here, I think this video shows us that sexuality, or even lesbian, could attract male easily. Not only in movies, but also in other mass media. It seems sexuality and hot girls in Twilight are the reasons that male would watch it and love it. However most male would never admit this, like those guys in video. Although I have not watched any Twilight series, I guess that most male watch it for sexy girls while female are fascinated by plots and romantic love stories.

  16. Like the title of the video, it's a movie for guys. It indicates that the movies with hot girls and sex really attract most of the guys. They don't even care about what is it and how it will be in the movie, all their attention is about sex and sexy girls making out.It also portrays lust on the guys. For women, they prefer the plot and romantic relationships in Twilight. Also in the video, the woman was absolutely unhappy while her boyfriend was talking about his feelings. In all, sex is playing a important role of the dissimilar between male and female gender.

  17. It is known to all that there are a lot of differences between male and female. As we talked about in class, it seems that women have less interest about having sex than men. In this video, it shows that the men enjoy seeing hot girls making out other than the development of the plot. And this is why a man doesn’t like to see the original “Twilight”. Unlike men, women like plots more and we can see that the girl in this video look uncomfortable with the scene. In conclusion, male and female are at variance about sex. And I think this difference may be caused by biological instinct.

  18. This video is basically stereotyping the two genders on the different aspects they look for in a good movie. Guys typically enjoy action movies, but this clip emphasizes how guys only like movies with a lot of sex or girls making out. It is also trying to be ironic in the fact that all the guys want to watch twilight. Through this they are saying that girls are usually the ones who want to watch this movie. Although I have never seen the movie, I know there are love stories in it that are typically only interesting to girls.

  19. The main cliche that this video beats to death is the idea that all men care about it sex. Hence why the male version is almost entirely about sex and the female version is a "sappy" love story. I also thought the statement made by one of the actors where he said he thought the movie was "going to be gay" was interesting. This statement makes the assumption that things that are not sexual and more emotional and romantic are not acceptable for men, not to mention homophobic in general.

  20. I agree with the previous post that this clip stereotypes the opinions of men and women when it comes to taste in movies. The video states that men enjoy watching movies with women and sex scenes, because those two things spark an interest for most men which will keep us more interested in the movie. Women aren't as aroused by sex scenes and other beautiful women, so they can see past these things to the real plot of the movie. The stereotypical opinions in the video are very true.

  21. As everyone has stated, this spoof's point is that men go to the movies to see sex and action sequences, whereas women go for the emotional experience of the story. Also, it spoofs how emotional girls can get about a storyline because it has some of the men crying about it in the interview. An interesting part of the clip is when one of the guys distinguishes between ‘bad gay’ and ‘good gay.’ When he’s talking about the bad gay, he isn’t necessarily talking about male homosexuals as much as he is using it as a general derogatory term to describe it as boring or lame. He then goes on to mention it turned out to be the ‘good kind of gay’ in which he is making a direct reference to the lesbian content. An ironic point could be made here about the perception that every guy loves lesbians. This is ironic because, although some guys may enjoy seeing attractive lesbians hook up, they are lesbians in the end therefore they have no interest in the men. One final point, the interviews of the ‘fans’ juxtapose the real interviews after the “Twilight” premiere, in which the girls get choked up while the guys just seem to be bored out of their minds, with these staged interviews where the guys are enthusiastic and emotional while the girls appear disgusted and lacking any interest whatsoever.

  22. I agree with all the comments that the video was making fun of stereotypes about both men and women. The video went on the idea that men are solely focused on sex and action, and exaggerated it to the point where they had the "typical" woman reaction. It even went as far as to reverse the roles which are known to be typical for men and women by making all of the women act embarrassed and bored as the men they were with broke down emotionally. These stereotypes were also exaggerated by making it seem like every man, no matter what race or nationality, loved the movie and thought every other person should see it as well, which we all know is not true to everybody because even with twilight in our own class not every girl loved the movie and every guy hated it.

  23. This video shows us stereotype of men and women about watching movies. Usually, men love to watch sex scene and hot girls, while women consider content of movie and emotional scene. For example, in this video, the men, who interviewed, just focus on girls in this franchise, not content of movie. However, the woman, neared by man who interviewed, seems not like this video.
